Potatoes are one of those foods that can be adapted to a variety of preparations. This dish not only uses more than one style of preparation, but it makes a stunning presentation! Which is why I am calling this easy to make dish, Holiday Potatoes.
We’ll start with a layer of buttered, cheesy mashed potatoes topped with thinly sliced potatoes. Then we’ll brush the tops of the potatoes with melted butter and sprinkle with parmesan cheese before baking them in the oven for about 1 hour.
The key to the beautifully layered potatoes on the top of the dish is a sharp knife. Having sharp knives in the kitchen makes a huge difference when you’re preparing food. The old saying is “the proof is in the pudding” but this time, it’s in the potatoes.

Ingredients
Method
- To make mashed potatoes, add the 6 potatoes to a pan. Cover with water, bring to a boil, and cook until tender when pierced with a sharp knife, about 20 minutes. Drain, mash until smooth. Add milk, butter, shredded cheese and salt and pepper to taste.
- Spread mashed potatoes into a greased 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Heat oven to 450°F.
- Slice each of the 4 halved potatoes into 1/8 inch slices, keeping them in a line. Fan out at an angle and place in rows on the top of the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, brush with melted butter and top with parmesan cheese.
- Bake for about one hour, until potatoes are tender. If desired, sprinkle with parsley, paprika or both before serving.
