Easy Homemade Pizza Crust

Pizza for dinner…it’s almost like a party itself! My favorite is a crisp New York style pizza crust. If you’ve ever wanted to make pizza parlor perfect crust at home, you’ll be delighted with this recipe.

This crust gets an early start. I stir the dough together the night before or the morning of making the pizza. But if a hankering for pizza sneaks up on you, dough can be started in as little as 3 hours before you want to eat.

This recipe will make two 14-inch pizzas. You can double it or reduce it as needed. After the dough rises, you’ll divide it into two portions and let it rest for 30 minutes. This rest time is critical for shaping the dough. It allows the dough to relax and respond as you stretch and push it into position on the pan. Take advantage of the rest time to prepare the toppings.

With mastery of the crust, you can top this pizza any way you like. Hope you love this recipe as much as I do!

Cuisine Italian

Ingredients

  • 14 oz (1 3/4 cup) lukewarm water
  • 1/4 tsp yeast* For a 1.5hr rise time, increase yeast by 1 tsp and place in a warmer drawer or inside an oven with the proof setting turned on
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour
  • semolina or cornmeal to sprinkle on baking pans

Instructions

  • Pour water into a mixing bowl.  Add yeast, salt, flour and stir together with the handle of a spatula or wooden spoon to form a shaggy ball. Cover and let rise until 1 1/4 hours before you want to eat.
  • Punch down dough. On a lightly floured surface, divide into two rounded portions. (If it is very sticky to handle, sprinkle with additional flour as you shape it.) Place the smoothed dough portions onto a greased baking sheet, not touching each other, and let rest for 30 minutes.
  • Sprinkle pizza pans with semolina or corn meal to provide a surface the crust can slide off after baking.
  • Top with sauce, cheese and toppings of your choice. Bake at 475°F in a convection oven or 500°F in a regular oven for 10-12 minutes.  Remove from the pan immediately, slice and serve.
